CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
RHETT
THE IMAGE of Ethan kneeling on the ground in pain will forever be my favorite memory. On the drive over to the Rightleyâs estate, I couldnât help staring at the layer of dirt coating the knee of his dark dress pants. I took pleasure in these minor victories.
The body that was tossed in the backseat of his car was in no small way responsible for that. She and her friend were now somewhere in the Rightleyâs ridiculous house. They had been taken to a set of adjacent apartments as soon as we had arrived, while Ethan and I went straight to the study.
Dark furniture covered every corner of the room and contrasted the white marble finishings echoed throughout the house. The shelves that lined two of the walls were filled with seemingly random knick knacks that were out of place in this morose setting. Of the entire property, this was the only place that felt honest. Too many times I had met here with Ethan.
Since first coming to Coranta, Ethan had given me more than a few dark tasks from this room. Tasks that had ended in adding to those shelves of which only one did I regret. A worn blue dog collar was propped on one of the many displays. Over the years, I had trained myself to ignore it anytime I was in this mausoleum. But today, it seemed to pulse. A painful reminder of another failure that I should have prevented.
Dark brown liquid swirled in the glass decanter as Ethan pulled at the airtight stopper. There was a sheen to his eye as he handed me a glass and poured. The clink of glass meeting glass was harsh on my ears. With his own already half gone, Ethan sat on the stiff leather couch, arm draped over the back and a look of victory plastered on his faceâsmug asshole. He was basking in a win that he had done nothing to earn.
My hand brushed over the letter that now rested in my pocket.
Wolf- Heâs taken the map of the continent and a squad car. Kindolf reported that they have yet to leave his house. What steps would you like us to take next?
My response had been quick, âClear the gate.â The more she knew about Hartlem and the rest of the continent, the easier it would be to train her for my purposes. I had needed her back in Coranta. Everything had been in place to keep her as far from RightCorp as possible and now, here she was, upstairs instead of hidden away. She shouldnât be here right now. I stared at the brown liquid with a scowl as I thought of the uncomfortable amount of time I had spent with Eklund to swap his pills.
Slowly decreasing the copâs intake of Soterapine was supposed to form a connection with her. Keep him close to her and have him report back with any changes until she could be moved. But his week-long nap had knocked that completely off schedule.
